In I Kings 18:21, Elijah asks the followers of Baal, "How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him." Elijah is challenging these people to make a decision about which god they were going to serve. He's basically saying to "Make up your mind and choose!" The thing that he is really challenging is their state of indecision or indifference. He uses the word "halt" to describe that condition.
The word "halt" means to be crippled or limited in your ability to produce results. Someone who is crippled is certainly limited from a physical perspective, but you can be crippled mentally and spiritually as well. Have you ever noticed how little gets done when we are indifferent about an issue? You may see a situation that needs change, but indifference creates an atmosphere that leads to no results; no change. The need for change is there, but the desire to do anything about it is not! The simple fact may be that you just don't care, and that is the perfect description of indifference's crippling effect.
The Bible also calls this condition being "double minded." James 1:8 tells us that this person is "unstable in all his ways." He also tells us that this person cannot receive anything from God. It's plain to see that this position should not be desired by any of us. Let's determine to be people of decision. Let's draw from God's Wisdom and get out of the valley of indecision. See you next week!
