Weariness, A Satanic Advantage

9/14/2004

1 Peter 5:8 says, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." This scripture plainly shows us that there is a being, the devil, who is opposed to righteousness, and is out to devour us if we allow him to do so. I want to talk about one of his methods in this week's teaching. Weariness.

One of the meanings of the word devil is to "wear down for the purpose of penetration." Satan is trying to wear us out so he can penetrate our minds and plant seeds of destruction. He wants to control how we think so he can influence our decisions. I remember how as a child, I would wear out the knees in my blue jeans because of the constant rubbing and soon it became easy to poke a hole in them because the material was worn out. That describes the devil's method of operation. Wear us out so it's easy to poke a hole in our mind, will and emotions. He wears us down through constant, continual harassment of the mind.

That's why we are to stay sober and guarded! Being sober means to not allow any outside substance to influence the way we think and the choices we make. We can become drunk on anxiety if we're not careful. Worry can wear us out if we give our thought life over to it! Isaiah 26:3 tells us that God will keep us in perfect peace if our thoughts and imaginations are stayed and focused on him! Let's all guard ourselves from weariness of the mind and not give the devil an advantage. Have a great week!
