If I say the name Benedict Arnold, what word immediately comes to mind? If you're familiar with American history, that word would be traitor! It is true that Arnold was a traitor and will be remembered right along side Judas Iscariot and Lucifer as those who defined betrayal in it's worst form. What many don't know however, is that prior to his betrayal, Arnold was called by George Washington the most heroic patriot this young nation ever had! Benedict Arnold's actions in battle had marked him as a great hero and leader. His men would say that they would gladly give their last drop of blood for the honor of serving under his command. So the question is: What happened?
Arnold was given co-command of American forces along with Horatio Gates to stop the British advancement in upstate New York in a town called Saratoga. Gates was somewhat of a coward, while Arnold was just the opposite! During battle, Gates ordered a retreat to which Arnold vehemently objected. In defiance of Gate's order, Arnold regrouped the troops and attacked the British resulting in the greatest, most important victory of the early revolution. It changed the course of the entire war! Arnold was severely wounded in the battle, and while recovering in a field hospital, Gates took credit for the victory and Congress promoted him to command the entire Southern Army!
Benedict Arnold became offended. Other things entered into the reason for his betrayal, but offense was at the root! Jesus said in Matthew 24:10, many would be "offended and shall BETRAY one another....." Has offense knocked you off course? Is the voice of offense louder to you than the voice of God's Word? Don't allow the poison of offense to steer you off the path The Lord has you on! It affected the entire life and destiny of Benedict Arnold, don't allow it to do the same to your's. Have a great week and I hope you enjoyed the history lesson!
