Finishing The Assignment

1/14/2005

Hebrews 5:7-8 tells us, "Who in the days of his flesh, when he offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered." I believe these verses describe what Jesus experienced in the Garden of Gethsemene. In that time, Jesus asked the Father that if it were possible to "let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt."(Matt.26:39)

The statement that Jesus learned obedience by the things he suffered was a tough one for me to swallow. After all, Jesus was never disobedient to the Father, he never sinned, so what kind of obedience did he learn from suffering in Gethsemene. In that garden, Jesus suffered the temptation to not finish what the Father had sent him to accomplish. As I see it, the obedience that Jesus learned was the obedience to finish and complete the assignment God had given to him. The job of finishing redemption and bringing deliverence to mankind. Jesus defeated the temptation to quit before his assignment was completed. The good news is that since he did that for us, we don't ever have to give up on whatever God has assigned us to do as well. For us, quitting is not an option either. Have a great week.
