Freedom Produces Holiness

5/14/2005

Many have said that if we tell people that Jesus has freed them from the captivity of sin, it might give them a "license to sin." The thinking is that the freedom Jesus has purchased for us will produce a lack of restraint in people and cause them to live without a sense of moral boundaries. Paul recognized this potential problem and said in Romans 6:1-2, "...Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein?" Even though Paul addressed this idea, it was obvious that he had more confidence in the power of the Holy Ghost to affirm to all believers that sin's hold on them was broken. He believed that knowledge of their freedom would not produce a lack of restraint!

Paul declared in Romans 6:22, "But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life." Paul stated that a knowledge of freedom will produce the fruit of holiness, not excessive lust and sin! He shows here a great confidence and faith in God's keeping power for His people, not in the power of sin to lead them astray. In short, knowing I'm free produces a desire to know the Father in a greater way and removes the attraction of sin from my life! Have a great week!
