Once Was Enough

11/30/2005

Numbers 20:8-12 records the story of Moses striking the rock twice in order to get water out of it for God's people. The Lord had told him not to strike the rock, but to speak to it and water would come out. Because Moses disobeyed the Lord, he was not allowed to lead the people into the promised land. It seemed a very severe punishment for simply hitting a rock twice, but the reason becomes clear as we understand that the rock was a type of Jesus Christ.

In Exodus 17:6, under God's direction, Moses had struck the rock once and water came out. The next time God told him to "speak" to the rock for the water. Jesus was crucified (struck) once to give us the water of life. He does not need to be crucified (struck) again and again. Once was enough! Now we have the privilege of speaking to the Lord to receive living water from Him. We enter our land of promise by declaring (speaking) that Jesus Christ is our Lord.

Hebrews 9:25 tells us that Jesus did not need to be sacrificed again and again. Verse 28 tells us He was "once" offered to bear the sins of many. Jesus opened up the lines of communication with the Father. Let's take advantage of it by speaking His Word and declaring His Name. Have a great week.
