Hebrews 12:14 says, "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord." Much has been said about holiness. Some have defined holiness as maintaining Godly conduct. Others have said that holiness is defined by the outward appearance we show to others. I certainly agree that the fruit of holiness will produce these things in our lives, but one aspect of holiness that may not be spoken of often enough is it's beauty! Psalm 29:2 tells us to "...worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness." Holiness is an aspect of God's character that is radiant with beauty. I believe that the beauty of God's holiness is what draws us to become closer to Him. Allow me to explain.
The first time I met my wife Lorraine, I was struck by how beautiful she was (and still is). I admit that my thoughts about her were very carnal. Her beauty caused me to want to get close to her. Her beauty attracted me very strongly. I wanted to know more about her. I also wanted to know what she did not like, because if I was doing any of those things that she didn't like, I'd stop them immediately! I wanted to eliminate anything I was doing that would keep me from getting to know her better.
God's holiness is so beautiful that it will cause the same affect in us that Lorraine's beauty did to me! I want to eliminate anything that I might be doing that's keeping me from a deeper relationship with Him. I won't be pained by giving up any bad habits or ungodly conduct because those things pale in comparison to my desire for closeness with Him! I trust you see my point. Have a great week!
