Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:1-2, "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy." It's pretty clear that these attitudes and actions will cause peril or trouble for anyone who habitually displays them! The things that Paul lists are beyond normal controlled behavior. Selfishness, greed, pride and being boastful are not words that we would enjoy using to describe ourselves. He does say however that these would be demonstrated in the last days. With all these ugly attitudes listed, right near the top of the list is "disobedient to parents." Apparently, the Lord classifies this right along side pride, blasphemy, greed and being unholy! That's not nice company to be mentioned with, but let's see why disobedience to parents can be so dangerous.

The very first level of authority that a child encounters is their parents. If a child begins to disobey or disregard the voice of the parent, they are rejecting the first level of authority that God has placed in their life. This is why it is so vitally important to correct this in our children. If a child develops a pattern of rejecting the voice of parental authority, they will be in the habit of disregarding all other levels of authority, including God's voice! A lack of respect for civil authority, governmental authority and all types of authority will develop. If this is left unchecked, an unwillingness to submit to the authority of your spouse will occur and may lead to the destruction of the marriage and family. The list goes on and on. Romans 13:1-2 clearly states that if I rebel against the God given authorities in my life, damnation is headed my way!

Obeying the parents is vital to the success and development of our kids. It will lead to obedience and respect of all God ordained authority in our lives. Blessings to you!
